Islamist Spring

Hi Everyone,

I know the other day the folks on the set of the Harvest Show touched on the results of the Tunisian election.

Lets carry on a little more in the discussion. The election has been won by the Islamist Ennahda party.

Looking from here, there is something frustrating in this victory.

In contrast to other Arab countries, Tunisia was prominent in its education for tolerance.

In the school there, their textbooks have been cited as among the most advanced in the Arab world.

The texts educate towards acceptance of the 'other', religious tolerance and the values of peace.

And yet, we see the citizens of the country have given the victory to an Islamist party.

Some in the media have said that the election results are a bitter disappointment to those who had high hopes for the country that had served as the catalyst for the 'Arab Spring'.

Perhaps it is to early in the development of this move of the people there to embrace a liberal democracy.

We can see from another country in the forefront of the news right now – Turkey, that such a concept did not really work.

At best one there in Tunisia can hope for an Islamist democracy.

But with a view from here in the Middle East, and with a play of words, one might see that if not an Arab Spring, then an Islamist Spring.
