Good Day All,
Chuck said yesterday that I would keep you abreast of the developments concerning the affair surrounding the assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a senior Hamas figure, in Dubai. From the view here within Israel, everything is becoming more complicated and is turning into a diplomatic incident. The countries involved in the investigation are accusing Israel of stealing their nationals' identities.
The main news here is that the Israeli media are backing the idea that it was indeed their own Mossad who carried out the hit. The assessment is that even if this is the case, it was worth eliminating the Hamas weapons purchaser and the exposure of the agents involved in the assassination.
Abroad in Britain, under increasing public pressure, the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown ordered the countries Serious and Organized Crime Agency to clarify who forged his countries passports of six British citizens. The Israeli Ambassador's of both Britain and Ireland also appeared for a clarification meeting – both said nothing to change or clarify the position that Israel is in.
Back in Dubia, the United Arab Emirate's Police commander says he is 99% sure, and it's been exposed, that a Mossad unit carried out the assassination. Dubai has also announced that it will distribute the perpetrators' fingerprints as it continues to transfer and seek information on their whereabouts.
In Gaza, Hamas has revealed the identity of the Palestinian suspects tied to the elimination, who are currently under arrest in Dubai. There is a third Palestinian man being tied to Hamas being held in Damascus, Syria as the war of versions between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority continues to boil.
Hamas has stated that they will avenge Al-Mabhouh's elimination as their military wing is holding a memorial rally for him in Gaza.
Israel will continue the policy of ambiguity surrounding the whole affair, as it has tremendous advantages to do so. It believes that this storm they are in will blow over and that the elimination of such a senior figure as Al-Mabhouh achieves a double objective by stopping his activities and creating a deterrent.
We'll have more on tomorrows Harvest Show broadcast.
